Verena Zeiner is pianist, composer and improviser.
Originally rooted in Modern Creative Jazz and improvised music, Verena Zeiner’s work today is defined by its dissolution of genre boundaries.
With an innovative and expressive approach, she seamlessly blends improvised music with elements of chamber music and jazz. In her current projects, she also integrates electronic sounds and live electronics, adding a new dimension to her compositions.
She composes for her own ensembles, contemporary chamber music groups, and interdisciplinary projects, such as those combining music with dance.
As a bandleader, she has released multiple albums and received awards for her work as a pianist and composer.

2011 | Scholarship Künstlerstarterstipendium des Bundes, followed by five months of artistic residency and research in New York City.
The improvement of musicians' working conditions has been an important concern for Verena up to this day, which is why she also has experience as a cultural worker, organizer and curator. Among other things, she is co-founder of Fraufeld, a platform dedicated to increasing the visibility of women in music.
In addition to her artistic work, Verena Zeiner is a Senior Lecturer in Improvisation at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. From Sept. 2023 to June 2025 she was lecturer for the Free Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Composition at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.
She completed her own studies (Music- and Movementeducation/Rhythmics; IGP Tasteninstrumente Popularmusik; Jazzpiano) at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, studied Real Time Composition with Opher Brayer and continues to deepen her expertise in composition and instrumentation through ongoing coaching with experienced professionals.

Ursprünglich im Modern Creative Jazz und der improvisierten Musik verwurzelt, zeichnet sich Verena Zeiners Musik heute durch die Auflösung von Genregrenzen aus. Innovativ und ausdrucksstark verbindet sie improvisierte Musik nahtlos mit Elementen der Kammermusik und des Jazz. In ihren aktuellen Projekten integriert sie zudem elektronische Klänge und Live-Elektronik, die ihren Kompositionen um eine weitere Dimension hinzufügen.
Sie komponiert für eigene Besetzungen, zeitgenössische Kammermusikensembles sowie für interdisziplinäre Projekte, etwa in Verbindung mit Tanz.
Als Bandleaderin hat sie mehrere Alben veröffentlicht und wurde für ihre Arbeit als Pianistin, Komponistin und Klanggestalterin ausgezeichnet.

2011 | Auszeichnung mit einem Künstlerstarterstipendium des Bundes, gefolgt von einer sechsmonatigen Residency in New York City.
Die Verbesserung der Arbeitsbedingungen von Musiker*innen ist Verena Zeiner ein wichtiges Anliegen, weshalb sie auch Erfahrungen als Kulturarbeiterin, Organisatorin und Kuratorin hat. Unter anderem ist sie Mitgründerin der Plattform Fraufeld, die sich dem Sichtbarmachen von Künstler*innen im Feld der zeitgenössischen improvisierten Musik widmet.
Neben ihrer künstlerischen Tätigkeit ist Verena Zeiner Senior Lecturer für Instrumentalimprovisation an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien. Von September 2023 bis Juni 2025 unterrichtete sie zudem als Lecturer das Free Jazz Ensemble sowie Jazzkomposition an der Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien.
Ihre eigenen Studien (Musik- und Bewegungspädagogik/Rhythmik sowie IGP Tasteninstrumente Popularmusik/Jazzklavier) absolvierte sie an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien und am Königlichen Konservatorium in Brüssel. Zudem studierte sie Real-Time Composition bei Opher Brayer und vertieft ihre Kenntnisse in Komposition und Instrumentation durch laufendes Coaching bei erfahrenen Expert*innen.
